Why should we send our child to the US?

The education system in the US is flexible and customized to meet the unique learning needs of every child; we have been privy to several transformative stories of young boys and girls who have done their undergraduate studies in the US. While larger universities provide diverse classes and world renowned faculty, smaller liberal arts colleges allow students to choose their specialization after the first couple of years. There is constant support in terms of a counselor, buddy and peers who will make the entire learning process an enriching one. Also from an employment perspective, the internship and eventual job opportunities are exciting in the US.

What are the other countries for college education apart from the US?

After the US, Singapore and UK are the most popular study abroad destinations for students from India. Of late, Canada and continental Europe are also gaining popularity. What is common to all these nations is the emphasis on overall grooming and development of the child.

How expensive is studying abroad? Will I get financial aid?

A US education costs about $60000 p.a. while a UK education costs about 20000 GBP. Education in Singapore will cost S$25,000 approx. While UK and Singapore are stringent with giving financial aid, USA colleges are more ready providers of aid.

Is scholarship or aid available?

Yes it is. There are two kinds of aid – Need-based Aid and Merit Scholarship.

My child hasn’t done too well in Class XI. How important are the school marks?

A drop in grades in Class XI is not very uncommon, considering the Indian system of education. Colleges will look at scores from Class IX onwards.

How important are the application essays and recommendations?

Essays are extremely important for applications to universities abroad. They are a chance to showcase a student’s personality, achievements and experiences. Our Mentors will help you identify which life experiences you should talk about, and ideate an interesting narrative for your story.

Students should have strong recommendations from their school counselors and teachers.

How do we select the right colleges?

We have a comprehensive short-listing process. Based on a student’s profile, the list is divided into Reach, Target and Dream colleges. We finalize the shortlist post extensive research and several rounds of discussions with students and their parents.

What is the best time to apply?

The best time to apply is in October. Top universities have their early application rounds in October. The regular application rounds are in December and January.

What kind of standardized tests is required?

SAT or ACT for US. Every country will require a language proficiency test – either TOEFL or IELTS. Colleges in the UK accept only IELTS.

How do I know which standardized test to take? What is a good SAT/ACT score?

It's all about the numbers. Some students end up scoring substantially higher on the SAT, others do better on the ACT. While SAT is widely taken in India, ACT is a similar test with a few key exceptions. A good score is the score that gets you into your dream college.

What is the admission committee looking for in an applicant?

In any applicant, the admissions committee looks out for the most crucial standout factor. This unique quality has to be adequately addressed in essays and letters of recommendation. In addition, the applicant should have a well-rounded profile which includes diverse extra-curricular activities, internships/ projects and community service.

What if I am undecided about my college major? How do I proceed?

While UK and Singapore universities require a pre decided major, colleges in USA are more flexible. Besides the Engineering and Business Schools, most colleges allow students the freedom to choose their major after admission. Liberal Arts Colleges are the best for undecided majors. Depending on the course and circumstances, a college may allow a student to switch majors.

What are the important deadlines I should be aware of?

US: 1st – 15th November for all Early Decision Applicants, 31st December for Regular Decision Applicants.

UK: 15th Jan for UCAS applicants.

Singapore: 31st March.

How do I choose a Masters program?

Broadly, the following criteria should be considered while selecting a Masters program - Their areas of specialization, research interests, professors and their work, job opportunities, cost of education, networking platforms, rankings, etc.

What is the duration of a Masters program? How is it different from a Phd program?

This varies across various subjects of study. While a Masters in Management or Entrepreneurship is of 9 months duration typically, a Masters in a Pure Science Program will be of 2 years duration. The “Phd program” is a combined Masters and Phd degree. While getting into a top “Phd program” is sometimes difficult, most students enroll into a Masters program and then convert it into a Phd. Funding options are available for all areas of study; however they need to be thoroughly researched.

What are top overseas colleges looking for?

Academic consistency and a promise to challenge frontiers of academic enquiry in the years to come. In the areas of Management studies, a more rounded application is desirable, but for pure research based academic programs there is no substitute to stellar academics. You need to demonstrate that your learning is not limited to your undergraduate syllabus – writing papers, getting published in journals, attending seminars and having strong internships and field exposure are viewed favorably.

What are the exams to be cleared for a Masters abroad?

The GMAT is the accepted standardized test for management schools abroad. For the fields of social sciences, engineering, and medicine, GRE is the acceptable score. It is very important to sit for the correct standardized test based on your area and college of higher study. For courses in Journalism and International Relations, for instance, colleges conduct specific tests to gauge ability and aptitude required for their programs.

How much work experience is required?

The quality of experience is more important than the quantity. Relevant experience, preferably with an academic or research institute, or an organization specializing in your interest area, is valued.

Can I do an MBA without work experience?

Theoretically there is nothing stopping you; however the odds are heavily against people without any prior experience. Recently, some business schools such as Harvard, Yale, IESE and ISB, have launched a 2+2 program where students can apply in their final year of college to secure a spot in the MBA class 2 years in the future. The 2+2 program is a lucrative options for freshers.
