Harvard, Knight-Hennessy and Rhodes application rules
AI application rules differ at Harvard, Knight-Hennessy and Rhodes; Indian applicants can discuss permitted support and preparation with Collegify.

The AI application rule a family should not borrow from another institution
Harvard College, Knight-Hennessy Scholars and Rhodes permit some forms of application support, but they do not permit the same work. Applicants must follow the rules of the actual programme, including restrictions on authorship and any disclosure requirement. “AI is allowed” is not a complete answer to whether a proposed edit is acceptable. Harvard, Knight-Hennessy and Rhodes.
For Indian families, the practical risk is importing one familiar preparation process into several different applications. A tool or adviser may describe an intervention as editing. The institution may treat that same intervention as taking over authorship.
These are different pathways, not one undergraduate shortlist
Harvard College's first-year supplement concerns undergraduate admission. Knight-Hennessy supports graduate study at Stanford, while Rhodes concerns postgraduate study at Oxford. A scholarship application can also carry obligations separate from the university's degree application.
In particular, the Knight-Hennessy page is not Stanford's undergraduate AI policy. Match the guidance to the specific application before using it.
Read the task, not just the permission
Harvard's supplement acknowledges help from people and technology but prohibits substantive content from other sources. It does not provide a detailed permission for every possible editing function. [Fall 2027 supplement].
Cost of studying in the UK for Indian students: separate full-degree expenses, visa evidence and payment timing before committing to a university offer.
In today's fast-evolving world, a master’s degree is increasingly essential for career and corporate success. The right program—whether in technology, business, finance, or management—can open doors and provide crucial skills. Strategic planning, preparation, and focusing on return on investment wil
Knight-Hennessy distinguishes organising existing points from generating the response's structure. It allows limited support but prohibits drafts, narrative frameworks, substantial voice-changing rewrites and generated reflection. [Full policy].
Rhodes permits specified AI support, including structuring help, while requiring the applicant's own substance and disclosure of assistance, including tools and use/prompts. Appropriate disclosure is not a disadvantage. Human mentors may give general feedback but may not write or edit the statements. [May 2026 guidance].
The difference around structure is especially useful. It shows why a family cannot assume that an outline is harmless because the applicant will write the sentences later. Nor can a parent assume that an intervention is acceptable simply because a person, rather than software, makes it.
What is the intervention actually doing?
Before seeking help, describe the task precisely. This comparison is a reading aid; the linked programme rules remain authoritative.
| Proposed help | The distinction that matters |
| --- | --- |
| Group points already developed | Organizing existing thinking is not necessarily permission to create the whole response structure |
| Identify an unclear passage | Pointing out a problem differs from supplying replacement wording |
| Make the writing more impressive | A change in voice can cross an authorship boundary even if the facts stay correct |
| Explain what an experience taught the applicant | The interpretation may be the very thinking the application is meant to assess |
| Prepare for an interview | Practice and live assistance are different tasks |
Rhodes, for example, allows AI interview preparation but prohibits its use during interviews and associated social engagements, whether online or in person. [Interview boundary].
A broad request to “improve this” is difficult to evaluate because it leaves the intervention undefined. Specify the task before sharing the draft. That makes it possible to check whether the help is permitted and describe it accurately afterwards.
Why a factual essay can still misrepresent its author
Fact-checking an application is essential, but it cannot establish authorship on its own. A project can be real while the explanation of why it mattered comes from someone else. An applicant may have participated in an activity without sharing the motivation a polished rewrite assigns to it.
A useful review therefore asks the applicant to reconsider both the account and its interpretation. What happened? What did they actually think? Does the final wording claim more certainty, responsibility or personal change than they can honestly support?
These are editorial questions, not an official admissions scoring system. Their purpose is to keep assistance from turning a truthful record into an invented persona.
Establish the boundary before the editing begins
Use a short preparation record for each actual application: the current policy link, the permitted work, any prohibited intervention and the disclosure requirement. Share it with anyone providing support.
Do not replace this with a single “strictest policy” for all applications. Avoiding a prohibited rewrite does not, by itself, satisfy a separate disclosure obligation. Where wording is unclear, ask the institution about the specific task before proceeding.
Keep useful original notes and draft versions. They can help the applicant see where the writing changed and keep an accurate account of assistance. They do not guarantee compliance or excuse prohibited work.
Before submission, check that required disclosures describe what happened rather than a reassuring generality. A claim that AI was used “only for editing” is not informative if it actually generated the structure or interpretation.
Before approving an improved passage, ask what changed: the wording, the structure, the interpretation or the claim about the applicant. Check the actual intervention against the relevant rule. That is more useful than reassurance that a tool or adviser was used responsibly.
The final review should leave the family able to explain both whose thinking appears in the application and how it got onto the page.
