Student Spotlight: University of Richmond - Sibling Camaraderie! Or was it rivalry??

Continuing our series of interviews, next up is a discussion with the Jhunjhunwala siblings from LMC – Yash and Devika. While Yash is currently studying Finance and Economics at Richmond, Devika is also headed there in the fall of 2015. Through the conversation, both brother and sister talk about the process of applying to college, the benefits of a top notch overseas education, their highs and lows and, we still can’t believe this, why on earth did they actually decide to go to the same college!

While interviewing, it was amazing to already see the maturity and evolution in Yash only a year after he has been in college. Probably shows the undisputed value and benefit of a strong global education!

1. Were your parents supportive of you going abroad?

My parents were definitely supportive of me going abroad since they wanted me to develop holistically.

2. How many colleges did you apply to?

I applied to Kelley, Richmond and Drexel and got accepted at all with scholarships in Kelley and Drexel. I would apply to Boston, Syracuse and William and Mary if Richmond would not happen but that ‘mauka’ never came (and I’m glad it didn’t!).

3. If not Richmond, where would you go?

If not Richmond, I would like go to Kelley School of Business since it was second on my shortlist and I got a direct admit there.

4. What did you like the most in the application process?

I liked the part when I was writing my Common App essay about something that I love to do - photography. On a Sunday, I was among the photographers shooting the Harley Davidson and Superbike owners of Kolkata, which was an amazing experience. Little did I know at that time that a large part of my Common App essay would be based on that!

5. Did you know that you would apply to the same college as your brother?

After spending 16 years of my life with my brother, I was relieved when he went abroad for college and I could have the room all to myself. However, in a matter of few days I realised how much I miss him. Little did I know then that I would opt to spend my college life with him as well!

6. What kept you going through the application process?

The fact that my brother had gotten into universities abroad kept me going despite my struggle with my loose writing skills. Like all other younger siblings, my motivation was, “If he can do it, I definitely can.”

1. What was your biggest take away going to Richmond?

Learning so much about the business world has really been advantageous for me. It’s been a constant learning experience, not only in the field of business but in other academic disciplines as well.

2. How would it help Devika to have you there?

She would have someone to depend on and guide her since I am already well versed with college life now. I am heavily involved on campus as a Resident Assistant, member of the Student Government and a Speech Consultant, so I am sure I would be able to help her settle in smoothly.

3. How do you feel about Devika coming to Richmond? Why do you want her there?

I am really excited to have Devika here! Growing up together for 16 years, this past one year has felt a little too long being away from her. I want her here because I know she would like the campus and the community. With the guidance of professors here she would grow to be a better person.

4. How has your experience been so far?

My experience has been fabulous. I love the University of Richmond and I cannot get enough of it. I literally like this place so much that I am looking forward to taking classes over the summer while giving up a major part of my summer break that I would have spent back home.
