England is moving towards AI tutoring for disadvantaged pupils at significant scale. Yet the same profession already adopting AI rapidly remains deeply unconvinced about handing it a tutoring role. The gap is not evidence of teacher resistance. It exposes a more important divide between using AI to extend professional capacity and trusting AI with educational responsibility.
The recent Canadian student-visa policy shift has proven to be the major catalyst in this chain reaction. The new 2024 policy, announced by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in 2023, details an approximate 35% reduction in study permits. This alteration considerably heightens the competitiveness of admission, causing Canada to become a less appealing option to many. With the housing crisis indicating no imminent plan to change this reduction in visas, the resultant effects don’t appear to be temporary. Considering additional difficulties such as the new requirement of the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), clearly shown by a significant drop in applications between July and October 2023, Indian students aren’t as interested as they once were in Canadian institutions.
These students don’t tend to give up on their international aspirations entirely. Rather than applying to Canada, they have shifted their attention to the US and UK. As such, international applications to these countries’ universities are higher than ever while the number of seats stays the same. This influx of applications from students looking to avoid the uncertainty around Canada has inadvertently skyrocketed the competition, especially in the higher-tier universities.
The UK in particular has seen a very notable increase in rejection rates, clearly signaling a decrease in acceptance rates as applications flow in. Several factors cause students to veer toward the UK over the US. One primary factor is the considerable disparity in cost. The average cost of attending university in the UK comes out to between £16,000-£38,000 per year, whereas, in the US it soars to $40,000-$65,000 per year, at times over double the average UK expenses. Such discrepancies alone are enough to strongly sway a student’s decision towards the UK. Moreover, the unstable nature of the job market in the US can deter many candidates from applying. A significant 78% of Indian students abroad choose STEM majors and careers.
Following the post-pandemic mass layoffs in the tech industry, many of these candidates are choosing to keep their distance, wary of the uncertainties that come with US education. This concern is compounded by the expectation of the return of unfavorable H-1B visa policies from the Trump administration that expired in March 2021. If the policy returns, it will prevent many international students from working after graduation completely.
Regardless of the dissuading factors of the US, it continues to draw students due to its presence in the educational industry and earning potential. The educational standards and prestige of these Universities remain top notch. The landscape of international education has undergone significant upheaval from the interplay of the pandemic and policy shifts. While this shift has intensified competition for admissions, it's essential for students not to be deterred from pursuing their educational goals. By making informed decisions, understanding the evolving landscape, and presenting strong applications, students can navigate these conditions.
