Student Projects: CS Curriculum for Underprivileged Schools

An important problem that our government is trying hard to solve through its Digital India initiative is cyber illiteracy. The next generation must not be left in the dark about computers and the internet. Today, it is an essential part of life and has the potential to drastically improve the standard of living of people, be it through the ability to sell online, or maybe by simply making use of otherwise hard to access government or banking services. People need to and deserve to be equipped with this essential knowledge and skill. It is with this understanding and intent that Kartikeya decided to create a detailed curriculum to make the underprivileged people around him computer literate. 

He found a small NGO, the Utsav foundation, dedicated to education and quality of life improvement in slums and villages in Gurgaon- it was perfect for the purpose. Currently, they educate around 90 kids as well as their parents, providing meals and healthcare. The kids there have never been to a school earlier, and have to be taught from the most fundamental, basic levels. it was an opportunity to ingrain an understanding for using computers in their minds from the very basics, a way to ensure that the knowledge they acquire will open new pathways in their lives. 

The computer course integrates videos, pictures, practical work as well as traditional textbook learning to ensure that schools and NGOs are able to use any and all resources available to them to ensure the best possible education for the children. 

Today, the book is published in English and Hindi, digitally and in paperback on Amazon, and this story has been picked up by news services around the world – hopefully, this inspires more people to continue such endeavors and help even more people. Several NGOs are now using this book to carry this noble intent forward.
