Writing A Winning Statement Of Purpose
The SOP is the most critical element of your application-your chance to have a favourable impact on the admissions committee by presenting your profile through an essay.
The SOP is the most critical element of your application-your chance to have a favourable impact on the admissions committee by presenting your profile through an essay. It is your space to:
Share the context for your interest in your preferred academic subject and your career.
Show how you have explored your interests through various academic pursuits, activities and internships.
Academic achievements and good test scores are important. But in an era where the majority of applicants have good academic records, it becomes increasingly important to distinguish yourself through leadership roles, voluntary service and personal initiatives.
Explain your interest in the universities and country you are applying to.
Your statement should say everything in a clear and concise manner in well-selected words. Some common SOP requirements:
Cost of studying in the UK for Indian students: separate full-degree expenses, visa evidence and payment timing before committing to a university offer.
SOP for UK (on UCAS) is limited to 4000 (approx.620 words) characters
Hong Kong University requires it to be within 1000 words
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology asks for 800 words
NUS has a limit of 2000 characters
NTU requires you to pick one out of three prompts- the third prompt can be addressed as an SOP- limit is 2000 characters
SMU has a limit of 300 words
Write and improve your SOP content with each draft to come up with an essay that is unique and compelling enough to convey to the admissions committee that you are right for their college.
Content Structure
Chart the development of your interest in the course you are applying for
Include a sincere, captivating or intriguing anecdote regarding the development of your interest in your preferred area of study. 1-2 lines about life in high school, especially subjects that you like (make sure they are relevant to your proposed major). Explain a little more about your vision going forward, and specifically how you see those goals fitting into the chosen program.
Briefly evaluate the significance of your academic accomplishments
Add insights on how the accomplishments represent aspects of your academic interests. Show through illustrative evidence by mentioning activities done related to your subject. Make yourself stand out and convince the committee that you have the academic spark and thirst for knowledge to add value to your class.
Mention real life work experience if any
For example, summer holiday internships (include post, scope of work, benefits/value of that experience).
Mention your non-academic extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests
Events, sports, NGO work, club, independent project work etc. How have these activities shaped you as a person and how can you contribute to the university with these experiences and interests.
Mention short-term and long-term goals
Give specific information-nothing generic. This paragraph should provide details regarding your plans at university and soon after completing your degree. Then specify how this short-term goal will lead to your long-term goal. End this paragraph with how pursuing the desired program will help you to accomplish these goals.
Justify your choices
Mention a good reason that would justify your pursuing this course, and also how studying it in the specific university/country would enhance your educational experience and profile. Mention some specific features of the university/country that are of significance to you.
Content Writing Tips
Your introduction should be interesting to read. An engaging hook is a must if you want the reader to read on. Be straightforward and concise – not boring.
Example: ‘Farmer Suicides: 70% of India’s farm families spend more than they earn’ - ‘11400 Farmers Committed Suicide in 2014’. The news headline from the morning newspaper kept flashing in my mind as I sat down with my team to brainstorm our business proposal idea. We were participating in the regional round of TYE (The Young Entrepreneurs). Being an economist at heart, I wanted our business plan to impact India’s agrarian economy in a positive way. I had no choice but to dream big.
Conclude on a high note. Nothing like leaving the readers with some ‘food for thought’ to keep your application playing on their minds.
Example: I seek to solve more challenging problems; I hope to one day definitively answer whether P=NP. I believe that the United Kingdom, the land of Alan Turing, is the ideal environment that will challenge, supplement, and expand my thirst for learning and problem solving. In the words of Kahlil Gibran, “Work is love made visible.” With knowledge, I possess the ability to bring to life my creativity and endow it with purpose. I believe that writing code is nothing short of poetry; it empowers me to create a universe whose laws I get to define.
Use the right words to convey the emotions or passion associated with your intent and work. Diction supports in evoking favourable emotional responses from the reader.
One thought should flow into the next coherently. Broken paragraphs will read more like bullet points and less like an essay.
Revise your final essay after 2-3 days, and then submit. Coming back to it after a short gap will give you an opportunity to review it with a fresh perspective.
