UK University Admissions Tests 2027: ESAT, TMUA, TARA, LNAT, UCAT & Key Deadlines

An October application deadline can create a misleading sense of time. The student is working on the personal statement. The school is preparing its reference. The family believes the important date is still a month away.

For some UK courses, an earlier test deadline can already have closed an essential part of the application.

UK university admissions tests for 2027 entry need to be planned by course, university and sitting. The UCAS deadline does not replace test registration, booking or access-arrangement deadlines. A completed application cannot compensate for a required test that was never booked.

This is particularly important in the present cycle because the names themselves have changed. Oxford's published 2027 requirements include ESAT, TMUA and TARA, alongside LNAT for law and UCAT for medicine. Start with the course, not a familiar test name

There is no single examination called the UK admissions test. Nor does applying for a subject at several universities necessarily create one shared testing requirement.

At Oxford, for example, engineering and physics sit within the ESAT requirements, while mathematics and computer science use TMUA. TARA applies to a different group of courses, including PPE. Those distinctions determine the preparation a student actually needs; they are not administrative labels to sort out after studying has begun. Oxford's course-by-course table.

For each shortlisted course, complete four checks before choosing preparation materials:

1. Match the course: save its current university requirements page.
2. Match the assessment: record the test and required components.
3. Match the sitting: confirm the accepted window, booking deadline and any access-arrangement deadline.
4. Close the action: record who will book, then save the actual confirmation.

This is work a parent can help organise without taking ownership of the student's academic choices. The distinction matters: protecting an application from an avoidable error is different from deciding the student's future for them.

The dates that need attention now

The following dates were checked on 13 September 2026. They relate to the current application cycle and should be checked again before booking.

Do not read the existence of a January test window as a general second chance. UAT-UK specifies which applicants must use October, identifies limited exceptions and permits only one sitting per admissions cycle. The UCAS deadlines remain separate: 15 October 2026 for most Oxford and Cambridge courses and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses; 13 January 2027 for the main equal-consideration deadline for most other undergraduate courses. Preparation is also a resource decision

Once the requirements are clear, the next question is how preparation fits around schoolwork. Adding another course to a shortlist can introduce another assessment, another body of preparation and another claim on the student's attention.

That does not make the course a poor choice. It does mean the application has a cost before any fee is paid. A family should understand that cost before treating an additional university as harmless insurance.

Begin with the official specifications and practice materials. Use the first attempts to identify what is unfamiliar: the knowledge, the reasoning, the time pressure or the test interface. Those are different problems. Repeating papers without identifying the problem can produce considerable activity without a clear improvement plan.

Before spending another evening refining the personal statement, check whether every required test is booked for the right sitting. At this point in the cycle, that may be the more consequential piece of work.
