Undergraduate Scholarships In Canada

Canada is home to hundreds of prominent educational institutions that take pride in their cohort of very accomplished educators and study resources. The cost of studying in Canada as compared to other study abroad destinations is comparatively lower for international students. In addition to that, Canadian universities offer a number of scholarships and financial aid too. These scholarships vary in nature, eligibility and award in different educational institutions.

Some Canadian universities offer entrance scholarships for international students who are coming to study in Canada for the first time, some offer in-course scholarships for those who are already a part of a Canadian university, and some offer both.

Let’s have a look at the scholarships and grants which are available to Indian undergraduates going to study in Canada.

Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program

This program is rewarded every year by The University of Toronto which is aimed to recognize artistic students who have extraordinary academic achievement and leadership qualities. Each year, approximately 37 students are chosen for this award.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must be an international secondary school student with a study permit looking to commence undergraduate studies in the following academic year. To become a Pearson Scholar, you must be nominated by your school.

Scholarship Award

The scholarship awards for tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for up to four years.

Each year the deadlines are tentatively as follows-

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award (ILOT)

International Leader of Tomorrow Award is open for all those international undergraduate students who have a brilliant academic record, leadership skills, regular participation in student affairs and community service, and recognized achievement in other key areas.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must be entering The University of British Columbia (UBC) from a recognized secondary school, and applying for his/her first undergraduate degree at UBC. The applicant must also demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent him/her from pursuing a UBC degree.

Scholarship Award

The value of the award is relative to the student’s financial needs decided by taking into account the tuition, fees, and living costs, and subtracting the financial contribution by the student and the family.

The Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study provided satisfactory academic standing is achieved, continued financial need is demonstrated, and Canadian study permit is maintained (student visa).

Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

This University of British Columbia award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and who would be unable to attend university without financial assistance.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must be applying for his/her first undergraduate degree at UBC. The applicant must also come from a war-torn, politically unstable, or economically disadvantaged region of the world. Also, he/she must have no financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary education in their own country (because it is unavailable or unattainable) or outside their country (because it is unaffordable).

Scholarship Award

The value of the Award is proportional to the demonstrated financial need and sufficient to cover living expenses and tuition costs for the degree of study and renewable up to three years.

Carleton University Entrance Scholarships for International Students

Carleton offers partial scholarships to exemplary students who meet the admission average criteria of 80% and above. The admission average is calculated from the marks submitted by the high school in support of the application. Entrance scholarship offers are not assessed or reassessed on final high school grades.

Eligibility

Applicants with an Admission Average (AA) of 95% and above are awarded an annually renewable scholarship of $4000 each year for four years. Similarly, applicants with an AA of 90-94.9%, 85-89.9% and 80-84.9% are awarded $3000, $2000 and $1000 each year, respectively, for four years. The scholarships will be renewed if the student maintains an annual GPA of 10.0.

York University International Student Scholarships

York University offers the Global Leader of Tomorrow Scholarships and the International Entrance Scholarships specifically for international students who would like to take a full-time undergraduate degree under the following faculties: Arts, Media, Performance & Design; Environmental Studies; Education; Health; Lassonde School of Engineering; Liberal Arts & Professional Studies; Science; or the Schulich School of Business.

Eligibility

To be considered for the Major International Scholarships, the applicant must be entering York University for the first time with a valid study permit. The applicant must have an excellent academic record with a minimum “A” average or equivalent and demonstrated leadership through community service or excellence in the arts, sports, or other areas of individual achievement. Also, he/she must be nominated by their high school.

Scholarship Award

Global Leader of Tomorrow Award: $80,000 ($20,000 x 4 years)

International Entrance Scholarships: $140,000 ($35,000 x 4 years)

All scholarships above are renewable for three years of full-time undergraduate study, provided high academic standing is maintained in each academic year.

University of Waterloo International Student Entrance Scholarship 

Twenty entrance scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding international students admitted to Year One of an undergraduate degree program. An application is not required.

Eligibility 

International students admitted with an admission average of 90% or above will be considered. Selection will be based on academic achievement combined with any other Faculty-specific entrance scholarship criteria.

Queen's University Principal's International Scholarship 

Five entrance scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding students from India admitted to Year One of an undergraduate degree program at Queen’s. An application is not required.

Ryerson’s International Secondary School Merit Scholarship

Seven entrance scholarships, valued at $5000 each, are awarded annually to international students entering Canada on a study permit. A separate application is not required for the scholarship.

With these scholarships on offer, and availability of part-time jobs on and off campus, the financial pressure on a student reduces to a good extent and makes Canada a promising study abroad destination for a hardworking Indian student.
